Ruined Farmhouse

We were commisioned to write two reports on this ruined farmhouse near Exmoor. A Heritage Report on the building and site and a more in-depth study on the materials, sourcing, and crafts. Rather than conserve as an important ruin, the client and architect were keen to explore the possibility of re-building the house using the vernacular materials and techniques.

The ruin still contained all the clues needed to piece together the entire building, showing it to be a lovely example of rural Westcountry vernacular. It was originally built from materials found at the site, with a diverse palette of different earth and lime mortars throughout the building.
