*** Cob Repair and Lime Plastering

This 18th century cottage is built of a combination of cob and stone, with a thatched roof. Our work started inside with new lime ceilings onto oak lath. The ceilings curve up into the roof space and are hung off the collars of the A frames. This is an original detail that provides the head room for the upstairs rooms and looks beautiful too. We then lime plastered the cob walls upstairs and the stone walls downstairs.

Whilst working on this project it was realised that one of the gable walls had separated from the house and needed to be re-built. The old cob gable was taken down, and the material was sieved and re-used with lime to make the mortar to lay pre-made cob blocks. These were keyed into the old building, and along with the use of stainless steel helifix ties, provided a strong new structure. Once completed a new brick chimney was built, and the thatch roof repaired.
The lime roughcast render was applied to protect the cob walls, and finished with several coats of limewash.
